D80 and Mirror Lock-up to minimise vibration
      #720325 - 19/10/2008 15:55

I have heard other photographers with Canon cameras using the mirror lock-up function to minimise vibration when taking landscape pictures on a long exposure (on a tripod). Does anyone subscribe to this method and if so, can I do it on my D80?

The user manual is brilliant for this sort of information ...

Menu > CSM > (31) Exp. Delay Mode > On

As digitals don't seem to take cable releases I also use the delayed action to set off the shutter so my touching the shutter release doesn't add vibration.

Remote (wired) releases are available for the D80 on Ebay for a few quid, mine works ok.

I used option 31 in menu ? (memory crop) all the time when I had a D80,takes some getting used to,(effect just like shutter lag on compacts) But it does work...

I thought the D80 took a wireless remote (ML-3 I think it was called).

I'm not aware of a socket for a wired remote?

The wired remote is the Nikon MC-DC1 (there are probably cheaper Chinese copies on eBay) and it plugs in under the rubber flap on the side of the D80. Details in instruction booklet.

The mirror popping up causes vibration, though, which is why mirror lock-up was invented. Besides, the D80, D90, D700 and D3 do, in fact, take cable release.

With 31 set up though the mirror lifts and a fraction later the shutter fires (shutter, well, you know what I mean lol)
