which one would you go for?
      #714277 - 06/10/2008 08:56

I have had my d40 for about 18months now and have been happy with it but I am now thinking of upgrading so the question is which one should I go for.
The options are D60, D80 or D90.

Since the D90 has been released thinking the price of the D80 will start to come down.

Also am looking at getting the 70-300mm Lens, so is it worth upgrading or should I stick to the D40.

I think I would look at the D200 which is falling in price since the D300 came on line. For the 70-300 again look at the VR version. Neither that or the 'standard' 70-300 are the best that Nikon have ever released so don't be frightened to look at independents such as Sigma, Tamron or Tokina. Physically check out the weight and feel of the lenses and check the test reports before buying.

Quick look at Ffordes website lists a couple of used D200 boxed camera bodies at approx £500 apiece. ITH

Have I mentioned that I think D200's are a bit of a bargain at the moment?

If you want auto focus with the 70-300 I think you will need at least the D80 but never having owned or used any of your options I will refrain from further comment.

The 70-300 VR Nikkor is AF-S so will AF on the D40(x)/60.

I paid £465 for a mint barely used D200 a couple of months ago, managed to barter the shop down from £479, which in itself was not extortionate.

These are superior to the double digit cameras (Nikon, as always doing the reverse of Canon!), but are much bulkier and heavier.
