I was reading the reviews at CNet and they rate the Nikon D80 at the top of the heap with entry level SLRs. Drawbacks seem to be a slower shutter speed and flash-sync neither of which should bother me as I'm not much of an action shooter anyway. I'd like to get some opinions if anyone has this one.

I've got a D80. It goes up to 1/4000th of a second, how much faster do people want it?
Flash sync is 1/200, which has suited me fine so far, and I shoot martial arts and combat sports with it.

I had a D80 for about a year. It was quite a nice camera, but the metering system is cruder than that fitted to the D70 and D200 and I found that it sometimes gave inconsistent results.
The shutter mechanism is also a simpler than the D70, which results in a lower maximum speed. This doesn't matter most of the time, but sometimes if you want a large aperture on a fast lens on a bright day, the limited max shutter speed can prevent this.
If I was in the market for a D80 today, I would spend slightly more and buy a D200 (assuming that I couldn't afford a D300). The D80 and D200 were fairly similar in price until recently. I don't know whether the announcement of the D90 has pushed D80 prices down further yet, but I suspect it will in time!

Bought a D80 a couple of months back as a back up to my D200. I absolutely love it and it was on my shopping list when I originally got the D200, on reflection the D80 would have met all my needs and it's a lot lighter!

I did the opposite! I bought a D80 when I would have really preferred a D200 (but D200's were £1200 at the time!)
The plasticky feel and inconsistent metering drove me mad with the D80, and when I bought an 18-200 lens the camera was ridiculously front-heavy. Eventually I upgraded to the D200.
What a difference! solid, professional feel, excellent metering, none of the compromises in shutter speed, image processing or frame rate of the D80, and image quality was excellent! Even subtle things like the significantly reduced viewfinder black-out time when shooting in continuous mode, and the sound the shutter makes, are all infinately more confidence-inspiring than the D80.
With the D80 currently retailing at £419 and the D200 at £629, it's no contest in my opinion, spend the extra £200 and get a professional quality camera, without the compromises is my advice!

Ditto, but I'm happy with my D80. If I had the money I would now "upgrade" to a D300 but I expect that by the time I can afford to do that, there will be a D400 (or whatever) as a successor. Reasons for upgrading would be better high-ISO performance, and weatherproofing

As the D200 and D80 have the same sensor, is the high-iso performance that much better?
