Was in Calumut Leith [Edinburgh] placeing an order for some gear, Asked the assistant, was there any more news about Nikon's latest releases. [Body's and Lenses]
He confirmed.........50mm f1.4 AF-S

You might have got someone into a lot of trouble. Another a week or two to learn that wouldn't have done us any harm. Shame on you. What about VR?

Never asked....anyway...don't think VR is realy needed on a 50mm. Also, shame on me? he should have kept "mum"

I've noted that the Warehouse Express ads in AP for the last few weeks have had a big red "NEW" next to the Nikon 85mm 1.8 and 1.4 optics. I wonder if there's anything behind that, or is it just a glitch?

Hmm I've noticed that for a while. To be honest I wouldn't trust it as correct, as they had the D40 and D300 trade places in their adverts for a few weeks earlier this year. If only I could have bought a D300 for D40 prices!

Maybe everything else they sell is overpriced 2nd hand stuff? I would expect any new or updated AF-S primes to be G type rather than D anyway.

Warehouse Express also listed various Nikons as "EOS D...s" a few weeks back. That's gotta have cost someone their job.

this isnt the only place where ive seen this rumour, and its seems a likely and natural step, considering the popularity of the new full frame system. However the speculated price is around £400-500, which would seem likely aswell, especially considering the chance of it being nano coated.

That is not as bad as an f0.95 at six grand; thank goodness that the Nikon throat is a bit too narrow for that sort of thing. For £400 I would at least expect VR and an aperture ring..

They definately need to add af-s to the fast primes. That would give ultra fast lenses, with even faster focusing!
So a 28mm 1.4, 50 1.4 and 85 1.4 all with af-s and maybe even VR and nano coating.
Then youd have a perfect lens trio. Though its not going to happen given the popularity of the new zooms.

With those kind of maximum apertures you don't need VR.
It's a waste of physical space on the lens and with the sensors in the D90, D300, D700 and D3 you're going to have to be in absolute darkness to need 2 or 3 stops of extra shutter speed (which VR provides) at f/1.4 and something like ISO3200!

I use this trio plus the 135 f2 DC and the 20mm f2.8 almost exclusively on my D3 having given up on the weight of zooms and fallen in love with the rendering of the primes. I for one find them QUITE fast enough, but I don't shoot sports. I certainly wouldn't want VR - it does funny things to the bokeh......
there's some argument for AFS on the 135mm, but definitely not the 28mm as it has a very short quick throw.

Me too. Just add in options for 14mm f/2.8 and 200mm f/2 for photo heaven.
