For my birthday a 50mm F1.8 or F1.4? I was thinking 1.8 and saving the money. I wanna start doing portraits. What shall it be?

If you don't need that extra half-stop, then I agree. No point in spending the extra.

What are the prices you are looking at for either lens?

f1.4 because good as the f1.8 is, there'll come a point where you'll say "If only I'd got the f1.4"

Anyone got any pictures from 1.4 at F1.4?

Get the 1.8, I have the 1.4 but it isn't 2.5 times as good as the 1.8 and I wouldn't spend the extra if I didn't have to. I have had mine for around 17 years and didn't pay anything like that much.

Seem to remember in the mid 70s, a 1.4 cost about £144. curious what that should be with inflation, compared to actual price now?
