I've never had a Nikon, never even handled one, shame on me,(would love a classic Nikon one day!) but anyway looking at,or rather drooling over a pic of a FM3A i noticed its lens had the weird 2 pronged device near the aperture barrel. I've noticed this before and always wondered what it was for. Is it some kind of metering coupler and if so why would a modern film camera need such a thing?

Larry, this Wiki article on the F2 explains their use. The are referred to as "rabbit ears".

Personally, I wouldn't want to go back to the '70s. If forced I would be an Olympus user though, the Nikons of the day were not quite as competitive as the OM1, which explains why I had an OM1 up to 1990. No I am happy to be in 2008 with Digital imaging and film available.

I just love that era photographically speaking. Technology was coming to the fore but there was still a lot to do. There's something about photographing out on the streets in the 60s and 70s that appeals to me.
