Christening with D300
      #681837 - 22/07/2008 21:00

I going to a relative,s little girl,s christening in august
and wondered with the Nikon D300 if I could get away without using my sb600 flash, I would not want to start the child crying.
I haven't been asked to do any pics, but thought it would be a better present to give them an album of the occasion ,rather than a silver saving tin or so such things.

Would I get away with ISO 6 or 800 ,thought of sharpening in camera so I can get prints quickly.

Any other suggestions welcome,as I am mainly into lanscape.....

I reckon you would get away with ISO1600 or even 3200 if you needed it. At ISO 3200 you might get a little softness and grainy-ness, but on the D300 this is not unpleasant!

Bear in mind that if your exposures are underexposed, if you subsequently correct them by increasing them by one stop in your RAW converter, it will also increase the noise, it is the equivalent of shooting at the next highest ISO value. Best to check your histogram and get the exposure as near as you can right on the day.

If your memory card is big enough, you might want to shoot RAW and JPEG simultaneously, as you will then have the immediacy of JPEG, plus the post-processing possibilities of RAW.

Let us know how you get on!

As an aside, it might be advisable to check with the vicar if it is appropriate to take photos during the service.

A lot of them don't like it and can get quite upset as I once found. Got the picture though.

As a D300 user I would expect this to be adequate, however this occasion does sound like a very good excuse, if one be needed, to hire a D3 for a few days. Flash destroys atmosphere and I would hope that the vicar would discourage it's use. Don't forget suitable lenses for the D3.
