Yes, after 1 month of (professional) use, my Nikon D3 broke down halfway through photographing a wedding (during the ceremony) last week.
I have no idea what exactly went wrong, it just kept flashing 'error' at me and refusing to allow me to change any exposure settings.
Luckily I had my faithful old D200 in the bag, set-up and ready to go.
However, going back to the D200 was quite a horrible experience. Compared to the D3, It was slow, difficult to find focus, the screen on the back seemed fuzzy and the whole thing just felt so unresponsive and wrong! (Although credit where it's due, at least it worked).
It's weird how quickly you get used to new kit and how the old stuff (that had always previously felt so cutting edge) seems so, well... old.
Luckily I had resisted the temptation to buy my D3 on the internet and instead bought it from Jacobs, who very kindly handed me a brand new one on the spot, no questions (or waiting a month for Nikon to get around to fixing the old one).
Let's hope this one lasts a bit longer!

Aperture ring shifted off minimum setting? I guess you probably checked that though. Ah well, there's always some small percentage of failures - just goes to show how important back-up still is.

"Aperture ring shifted"
This happened to me at a wedding and it took ages for the penny to drop. It was the only time my Nikon caused me any trouble at all.

No no, the fault was a real one (I'd remembered to put the battery in and everything). Jacobs took one look and said it was one to go back to Nikon. Their explanation was, and I quote: "bad luck"

I will always pay a bit extra for high St dealerships for this reason, but bite the bullet and take a chance online If price difference is silly money...
