Hi all
I need to buy either the TC17E11 or TC20E11 next week for my AFS 70-200. I've read conflicting reviews about poor image quality on the 20E11, whereas the 17E11 seems to be very good. I'm tempted towards the 20 because it will give me 400mm focal length versus 320mm with the 1.7 and we're going on safari. Mind you I suppose if I bung the D3 in DX mode 320 becomes 480mm ish which is quite handy.
Anyone used either specifically with a 70-200 AFS and have views?

I have no experience of these TCs but there is no need to put your D3 in DX mode to 'increase focal length' (unless you are using a DX lens). All you need to do is use it on full frame and crop the resulting images if you want to get 'closer' - that's all the DX mode does. Better, IMHO, to shoot on full-frame and crop on your PC than to set it to cropped mode and potentially miss out on some wider shots (or find yourself fiddling between modes). I have been on safari and the last thing you want to be worrying about when presented with a sudden opportunity is camera configuration.
When I went I had 500mm at my disposal on a full-frame 35 mm SLR; I wouldn't want to have had anything less (I had another body with a wide/tele zoom on for variety).
However, I would suggest that given the supposed image quality from the D3 sensor, it would be better to take the optically-better option (the 1.7x) and crop the image than take the 2.0x, which drops you two stops of light and potentially introduces optical issues.

I use the TC-17 EII with the 70-200 and 200-400 and it's fine.
There's no point at all putting the D3 in DX crop mode; all you are doing is cropping the images at the time you shoot instead of later at the PC. If you want to think of the D3 in DX crop mode as stretching the focal length to 510mm (200*1.7*1.5), that's fine, as long as you also remember your 12MP pride and joy becomes just 5MP.
Much bigger worry for me would be taking the camera and lens on board a plane and not falling foul of some airline regulation or other.

I am fortunate to own both 70-200 VR along with the TC2x AFS and found it to work without any problems on my DX crop bodies.
And even with the 2x fitted focusing was still fast and accurate.
I haven't got around to using it with my D3 yet but I would hope/expect it to perform equally as well.

I've heard of people stacking teleconverters on the D3 to obtain maximum focal length and just boosting the ISO.
No idea how well it turns out though.!

TC on the 70-200 2.8 - messes up the bokeh.... yuk - don't go there.
