Hi N_B_D,
Firstly, welcome to the AP Forums and, secondly, you mention you have the Sigma APO but don't say which one ...so I will presume that you are referring to the Sigma 70-300 APO which, if this is the correct lens, has a quite decent macro setting (1:2 -- about 1/2 lifesize or from approximately 1 metre a normal business card will fill the frame) which may be adequate for shooting around the garden. As well, you will be far enough away from you subjects so you can use your built-in (or add-on) flash for some fill light, if required
Thirdly, the 50mm is a nice small, fast lens to have around if you want to shoot indoors (w/o flash) or do some informal portraits and be able to blur out the background
As alternatives, albeit much more (relatively) expensive, you could go for a variety of macro (Nikon, Sigma, Tamron or Tokina) lenses and some wider (than your 18-70) angle (Nikon 12-24, Sigma 10-20, Tamron 11-18, Tokina 12-24 or 11-16) lenses.
Hope this helps a little and isn't too confusing ... although after re-reading this ...even I am a little dizzy .... and I sell these things
Cheers,
Jack

Sounds like you are pretty well covered with the exception of a Ultra wide angle. And they are not to everyone's liking as they are not the easiest of lenses to use at first. "Due to what can be a massive perspective change from what you might be used to. If like someone already mentioned and you have the Sigma 70-300 apo you already have a excellent macro facility on that lens.
Just get yourself out and about shooting.

Nikon 50mm F1.8 does worth it's price!
Just get it! No question!
