Nikon F2AS
      #672711 - 30/06/2008 17:14

Hi Guys

apologies for being a newbie, both to the forum and to "serious" photography both...

I have inherited a mint condition F2AS from a deceased uncle, it appears he bought it new in 1977 and hid it from his wife whilst using an FG(?)

The question is.. do I sell it (and where) and use the funds to buy a decent digital set up, or do I soldier on with film?

Thanks

Simon

Aperture Photographic have a couple listed at around £350-390 but thats retail so private or trade in is going to be less (trade in especially). The F2AS is a fine camera but even so resale values do seem to have taken a hit.

If it were mine I'd just keep it and use it - but then I'm very poor at getting rid of kit...

Good digital of today will pass through obsolesce to obsolete to rubbish within 3 years. Digital progress is rapid. Good obsolete film gear will become classic and is probably actually appreciating in value if it is near mint.
I suggest that you keep the F2AS. If it is in pristine condition then use it very carefully, but do use it and savour the experience.

Definitely keep it. If nothing else it'll be a wonderful thing to use for a change from a modern all-singing, all-dancing thingy.

Don't use it carefully. Thrash it mercilessly again and again. It will just keep coming back for more. The F2 series of cameras were by any standards timeless, really well constructed and the nearest thing to un-burstable. Absolutely magnificent machines. It will be 30+ years old now so will benefit from a service and a general check over. The metering head will probably need calibrating anyway, and these ones don't have the same problems as the earlier ones fitted to the original 'F' models The cost will repay itself time and time again.
Have fun.
