Lens recycling
      #659505 - 26/05/2008 11:33

I've had my af-s 70-200mm f2.8 vr lens for about 9 months, and whilst on holiday last week during a rainy afternoon in the caravan, to help with the bordom i started playing with the lens, i noticed what looked like a 10 year recycling symbol on the underside of the lens. Can any of you guys n dolls throw any light on this.
Thanks all.........Jon

It's a circle of arrows with a 10 in the middle, meant to mean the expected life of the product is at least 10 years. Other lenses have it, as does the D3 which also carries the EU wheelie-bin with a cross symbol. As if anyone is going to toss their D3 into a wheelie-bin...

EU bureaucracy gone mad...

The Leica M8 has the same stuff, a sticky label on the removeable base beneath the protective film. Nothing that a little organic solvent will not deal with in a jiffy.

Would this mean that we could call on EU assistance should an item bearing that marking not be repairable within 10 years after purchase? (Purchase rather than introduction to market of the item.) If so, it could cause an increase in prices as importers could be forced to keep larger stocks of spares.

Don't worry, it's nothing to do with the life of the lens. Here's what the Nikon website says:

"This symbol indicates that the lens meets Chinese regulations regarding the use of environmentally friendly material used in the construction of the lens or camera. In China all items that meet these legations must display the above symbol. Any items that do not meet the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) regulations can no longer be imported into Europe so no similar logo is required for Europe."

Err, no. Without wishing to be overly pedantic, the "10" means the design target for the item is that it will not create an environmental hazard within a period of 10 years by, for example, leaking or undergoing chemical change.

You don't want to believe what manufacturers write in their FAQs; I wouldn't put my best people onto to the task and it's clear Nikon don't either.

Mark - you just backed up what I said - that it's nothing to do with the Nikon company's life expectancy for the lens, and that it's simply a Chinese regulation regarding:
“the term during which toxic and hazardous substances
or elements contained in electronic information products
will not leak out or mutate, thus eliminating the possibility
of serious environmental pollution resulting from the use
by users of electronic information products or serious
harm to their persons and properties resulting from such
use.”

Seems to me that if a product is leaking and mutating, it has, by definition, reached the end of its design life. I'm also bemused by the use of the word "legation", n. 1. a diplomatic mission. 2. the official residence of a diplomat. These FAQ answer writes should really avoid using words of more than one, maybe 2 syllables. Whatever.
