hey all, I am a bit stuck, could do with some advice. I dont wanna spend too much this year on glass, I took some excellent shots last year with the 90-300 usm, but need a new zoom lens for this year.
Been looking arong, is the 70-300 sigma ok for airshows? IQ isnt an issue, more the autofocus speed.
Its on a 40d, so any help would be great.

Personally I feel that a bit more lenght would be useful. I curently use the Sigma 28-300 and before that the Canon 75-300 USM and really wanted more, I had a cheap 2x converter from Jessops but found uisg it on manual focus with the Canon lens awkward as the front element rotated with the focus ring and was very easy to move as the focus with the 2x on would go well past infinty Autofoucs did work on occasion but was not reliable. With the Sigma I think it would be much easier to use the lens on manual and am thinking about a cheap 1.4x converter if I can find one. About 30 years ago I was using a Vivitar 80-200 with 2x converter on an ME super regularly at airshows and really could have used another 100-150mm did use a 500mm mirror and that was about the right length. I have a 500mm Centon mirror lens wich dose work on my 300D but the contrast is so poor (I think it is flare) that it takes a lot of work in Photoshop to get good results with it.

thanks for your help - I had a bit more thinking, and to be honest would have loved to buy the 100-400mm L - I just couldnt do it for one day of the year, so got the 70-300 IS instead. Hopefully the quality will be better than the 90-300 so I can do some crops.

Don't just use it on one day a year. RIAT this year may have the Vulcan flying. Worth a visit just for that. 12th/13th July here.
Some pictures from previous RIATs on my photobox site below.

Oh YES! - we going on the 12th - For the Vulcan. I got some spectacular shots last year with my 350d and 90-300 lens. Hopefully this will be better!
Cant wait to see the Vulcan if it is finished on time!
