Okay drooled over this lens enough and ready to purchase and take advantage of Canon's spring cash back offer. Have found it as cheap as £300 online and seen a couple of expired reputable eBay sellers selling it for £250 so know I can get it cheaper. Would need to be in the UK with UK guarantee as don't want to get stung with duty charges. If anyone could point me to some good offers would much appreciate it.

www.camerapricebuster.co.uk is probably one place to start looking at. According to that site Martins Camera Shop in Leeds is the cheapest, but search around to see what peoples experience of this shop is like. Remember cheapest is not always the best!
The ebay seller Kerso might be one to consider, he imports via his sister in Scotland so no import duty worries (cos he's paid it - and he's a little cheaper if you deal outside of Ebay/Paypal).

Cheers for the pointers. Ordered the lens off a power seller on ebay for £303 delivered so well chuffed.  UK stock as well. Ordered Sunday night and arrived this morning. Thanks again

does this lens do anything other than close ups and portaits or will i need my standard lens for building shots etc

It'll photograph anything you want it to and with exceptional sharpness and resolution. Nonetheless I would not advise it's use as a general purpose lens. On the 40D it will have a very narrow angle of view, fine for close ups, portraiture (particularly head & shoulder type) and picking out detail that's otherwise out of reach but not really ideal for all encompassing views of buildings etc unless you can stand along way back from them.

Good advice....it has it's uses and is a good performer but is a bit long most of the time I find.
Head and shoulder shot...from a few metres away in a big room (100mm macro on 40D):
For a macro lens it's suprisingly good at action too....but again you need to be a fair distance away:
It does the macro thing just fine too BTW

Ah right......would I be right in suspecting that you are dissatisfied with the performance of the lens?
For something to take to NY that will give you a better result quality wise then you'd probably be better off with one of these:
EF-S 17-55mm f2.8
EF-s 17-85mm IS USM
Sigma 18-50 f2.8 or it's Tamron or Tokina equivalent
Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5.
My own personal choice is the 17-70 because I prefer the slightly longer reach over 18-50 and neither EF-s lens will fit my old Canon D30. It also performs well above what you might expect for the price.
The 100mm is a superb lens but I think you would be better placed replacing the standard kit lens with something of equal versatility but better performance.
