EOS lenses in the states?
      #659652 - 26/05/2008 21:09

Hi, I have a canon eos 400d and am looking for a decent all-in-one zoom lens for it. It needs to be fairly sharp and good but I want it to have wide-angle if possible as well as a good zoom range. What do you all recommend?

Also, Im going to new york in June and I'm planning on looking at lenses over there. I know the EOS 400d has a different name there (digital rebel or something) but will the same lenses for the digital rebel fit the EOS despite the difference in name?

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for camera shops in new york?

Thanks for any help in this!

I have the Sigma 28-300 zoom that I use on my EOS300D. I got this lens to replace my Canon 75-300 which I unfrotunatly lost I was going to get the Sigma 70-300 but found that the super zoom gave indishtingusable results) checking the test results on the sigma website the 28-300 seems to give as good or better results than the 70-300 the only draw back is the slightly smaller maximum apature of the 28-300. I find that with the 1.6x crop on the APS sensor means that you do still need to have a wider lens (The Sigma 28-300 is a full frame lens).

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'm going this week so I'll make a note of it, but with all those holidays looks like I might not make it in time lol.

thanks again.

Hi BigAl, thanks for the suggestion. How do you find the 28-300 in terms of picture quality? Also is it really big to carry? That's another concern I should've mentioned.

When I got the 28-300 I took pictures with both the 28-300 and 70-300APO sigmas and really could not tell which lens was used apart from the EXIF details. The quality is also comparable or better than the Canon 75-300 (IMO of course) The lens is not overly heavy although it dose get quite long at 300mm, there is a zoom lock to keep the lens at 28mm as it dose tend to creep when pointing downwards on the strap. I also have the 20-40 f2.8 EX DG that I use as a standard zoom and it is no heavier than that. My son is into adventure sports (Doing a course in them at college) so the 28-300 seems to spend a lot of time on my 300D all in all I am very happy with the lens especially if you need a telephoto zoom under £200 which was my absolute max budget and it came in well under that.
