Which Bag?
      #652463 - 07/05/2008 12:20

I have a Canon 350D with kit lens 17-55mm, a Canon 55-250mm IS lens and a Canon 100mm USM Macro lens. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a bag for me. I was looking a the Lowepro SlingShot but unsure which one. I don't have plans to buy any more lens in the near future just yet but if I do it may be a better telephoto lens or / and a wide angle lens.

I've a Tamrac Velocity 8X as my everyday bag. In it I've got a 400D or 40D, 17-85, 10-20 and 70-200 lenses. Plus room for extra batteries, CF cards, filters, cloth and remote timer. Sits comfortably over the shoulder. I found it easier and more comfortable than a Slingshot (cheaper too).

Yes, I have been reading some reviews today about the sling shot and a couple of people complain that it digs into your left shoulder too much and all the wait is on one side which makes it awkward. I think a full rug sack would be my preferred choice but with easy access. I have been put off Lowepro a bit as I have purchased two lens cases by them and they do not fit the lens they where modelled with and seem to offer little padding or protection.

I'd love to give you a review of the National Geographic rucksack, but mine hasn't arrived yet from WDC.

Might be a bit big though. Thats a size up from the Micro Trekker, which fits 1 Body + lens, as well as the 100mm Macro, 70-200 2.8 and 300f4. (just mind, no room for sarnies, but film goes in the pocket on the front)

I have the Lowepro Orion Trekker II for practically the same set up as you, it also gives space for all those other little bits of a photographers life and it is like a day sac for walkers, easy and light

Seen some great reviews for this bag but a few complaints about rain water getting in too easily. Is this a problem you have had?

not really but I've never taken it out in a really heavy deluge, just normal showery type weather and the only time it let me down was when I had both zip togs on the top with a small gap - never made that mistake again

it isn't really heavy waterproofed though - I would say shower-proof is the best way to describe its feel

If you plan on takeing long walks in places where it might rain heavy (so anywhere in the UK and moreso in the north ) you might go to a camping shop and get a rucksack cover. They are light and small and easy to put over a bag quickly if the rain gets too heavy. Course downside is that you have to stop and put it on

Cheers for that. I know some of the Lowepro bags come with a shower cap but did know you can buy them on their own. Cheers for all your help. I am in London again end of next week so will take another trip to Calumet and check some out. Cheers for all your help folks.

Got an email today from Lowepro, 'cause I bought a large bag last year when they were doing a cashback promotion. It seems they are doing another this year. £10 cashback with any Lowepro bag purchased between £50 and £100 or £20 cashback with any Lowepro bag purchased for more than £100.
Details here.

have a look at the kata range. i bought the DR-467, link is here http://www.kata-bags.com/Item.asp?pid=401&cid=28&perentId=4&ProdLine=4

or if u dont want the laptop bit? look at the DR-465. link is http://www.kata-bags.com/Item.asp?pid=400&perentId=4&ProdLine=4" target="_blank">herehttp://www.kata-bags.com/Item.asp?pid=400&perentId=4&ProdLine=4</a>

i can get my d80 with 18-70, 70-300 sigma and a sigma 10-20 still with room for flash (if i ever buy one)
the 467's top compartment is a bit bigger so u can fit sarnies, mem cards, pens etc. oh and both bags come with a rain cover which is brilliant!

well worth a look. hope this helps
