MONTHLY PHOTO COMP THEMES — 2008
      16/07/2007 23:16

Dear Forumites

Welcome to the monthly forum photographic competition. You will see below the themes for our 2008 rounds, and a few short notes of guidance for each round. I hope you enjoy taking part and I really look forward to seeing your pictures.

This is a ‘for fun’ competition, but this year we have a few prizes for the best three entries each month. The very nice people at Nikon have given us Coolpix S210 for the twelve first-place winners, while second and third places will be rewarded with a special ‘Amateur Photographer Loves My Pictures’ mug.

Thanks very much to Siuya and the moderators for running things so smoothly, but PLEASE READ THE “POSTING IMAGES – MAXIMUM SIZES etc” sticky BEFORE POSTING FOR THE FIRST TIME

Best of luck to you all, and get those imaginations into gear.

damien

Forum competition - Themes 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

January - "Self portrait" ***Closed***

Is it really you?

For this round take a picture of yourself as you would like other forum members to see you. The picture might show you exactly as you are, but you are also free to distort the truth. How would we ever know whether you are lying or not?
You should include your camera or some reference to your photographic interest – and that will be the only part of the image that is definitely genuine.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

February – "Clues to the season" ***Closed***

How do you know it is Winter?

Take a picture that demonstrates that winter is upon us. There are many ways of doing this, so you are not limited to any particular photographic genre. Think about how the world looks a certain way when it is bleedin’ cold outside.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

March – "Using black and white" ***Closed***

What is special about monochrome?

Shoot anything you like in black and white, but pay attention to what makes monochromatic pictures special and use those characteristics to your advantage.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

April – "Close-up" ***Closed***

Are you looking close enough?

Close-up does not have to mean macro, as it only really means closer than you would usually get. For this round we're looking for photographs that show the subject in much more detail than we are used to seeing it. It could be a brick in a cathedral wall just as much it could be a greenfly on a tomato leaf.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

May – "Sky" ***Closed***

Did you look up recently?

The sky is constantly changing with colours and clouds shifting with the wind and the passage of the earth around the sun. There are wonderful shapes, patterns and drama as well as calming and soothing softness. It's massive. Make it in to a picture.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

June – "Plant life" ***Closed***

Whoever made these?

I can't even begin to explain how fascinating plants are; they are so varied and are built with the most incredible attention to detail. Colours, symmetry, design and functionality are just a few of the things that spring to mind, even in grass. Show us something amazing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

July – "Skin and bone" ***Closed***

Are we all beautiful?

Hot on the heels of last month's theme of plant life, this month we are going to look at the human. Muscle wrapped around a framework of bones, with tissue, hair and water, we are probably more interesting physically than we are mentally. Find the beauty and wonder in the way we are formed, from the smallest knuckle to a complete structure.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August - "Landscape with a standard lens" ***Closed***

How's it look with one eye shut?

landscape=countryside=seascape=urban=industrial

We are programmed through the propaganda of popular belief that landscapes should be shot either wideangle with dramatic foreground or telephoto as a Tuscan house appears across the misty valley. Get a sense of reality and shoot this month's theme with a lens standard for your system.

135 -------------------- between 40-50mm
medium formats ----- between 80-90mm
5x4 -------------------- between 150-180mm
APS-C sensor -------- between 28-35mm

and so on.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

September - "Street scenes" ***Closed***

Is that really what we look like?

Show us what life is like where you live. Capture the essence of your town, city, village or community, be it a thriving hub or quiet backwater. As this is a fun competition, I'll also allow you to pretend you live somewhere you think is bit more interesting so you can take your pictures there. The main thing, though, is to capture an engaging street scene - you'll be judged on your skill and luck, not the location.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

October – "Ground level" ***Closed***

What's it like down there?

Get down on your belly and see the world from a completely different angle. For this round I don't mind what you shoot, but you have to do it with the camera down at ground level. Of course, you don't have to get down yourself, as you can hold the camera down low and guess the composition without looking through the viewfinder. The idea is to make something that looks shockingly different, so think about scenes you wouldn't normally see from that angle.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

November - "Just one colour" ***Closed***

What's the best colour?

Take a picture that is dominated by one or two colours. Er...and that's it. Make it work.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

December – "Abstract" ***Closed***

You know what it is yet?

Make a picture in which it is not immediately obvious what the subject is. Maybe after a few seconds we will work it out, and maybe the mystery will never be solved, but the most important thing is that the image is pleasing, exciting or surprising.
