Canon EOS 7D, 17-55mm, 1/640sec at f/7.1, ISO 100

Skógafoss, Iceland

Judges say: ‘This round presented a daunting task for the judges. When faced with so many strong images, how do you pick a winner? After much thought, first prize was awarded to Chris Bennett with his truly dramatic shot taken in Iceland, a location that is a constant inspiration to photographers. The cascading water is awe-inspiring and Chris has selected just the right angle and position to give us a sense of scale

2nd Freddie Ardley, Gloucestershire 45pts

Fujifilm FinePix HS10, 4mm, 1/600sec at f/6.4, ISO 100

Nepalese Himalayas

Judges say: ‘Freddie’s shot of a lake beneath a large glacier was taken while he was trekking in the Nepalese Himalayas. His image shows us something truly amazing. That’s one of the joys of photography – it can bring us experiences that we may not otherwise encounter on our own travels. This is a truly strange image with a stark tonal range that makes the location seem almost otherworldly.’
